Arsenal - Aston Villa Preview

29 02 2008

vs.

Barclay’s Premier League - Round 28
Emirates Stadium, London 1 March 2008
Kickoff @ 3pm GMT

OUR SQUAD: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Senderos, Clichy, Walcott, Fabregas, Flamini, Hleb, Bendtner, Adebayor, Lehmann, J Hoyte, Denilson, Gilberto, Traore, Lansbury, G Hoyte.

MISSING: Diaby (possible), Djourou, Rosicky, Eduardo, Song, van Persie, Toure

FORM: Aston Villa have won two consecutive matches after a three game winless streak that included a well-deserved draw at Anfield. They are 2-2-1 in their last 5 away matches. At 13-8-6, they sit in 6th place behind Liverpool on goal differential and three points ahead of Portsmouth and Man City.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Arsenal have not lost to Aston Villa in the league since a 3-2 defeat at Villa Park on December 13th, 1998. Arsenal took a two goal lead into halftime courtesy of Dennis Bergkamp but goals by Julian Joachim and Dion Dublin , four minutes apart, leveled the match. Dublin then won the match for Villa seven minutes from time. Since then, Arsenal’s record against Villa is 13-5-0. Between April 12 and November 30, 1993, Villa won three straight at Highbury (2 league and one league cup). However they haven’t at won at Arsenal since.

STATS: Emmanuel Adebayor sits two goals behind league leader Cristiano Ronaldo with 19 goals. Cesc Fabrega is second in the league in assists with 13, one behind Saturday’s visitor, Ashley Young. Gael Clichy remains tied for the league lead in appearances with eleven other players including Aston Villa’s Wilfred Bouma and Martin Laursen. John Carew leads the Villains’ attack with 9 league goals.

INJURIES: It is possible that Diaby will be inserted into the squad but the rest remain out. Eduardo has been released from the hospital and the club’s medical staff hope that he will be running in six months. Robin van Persie is back to full training and Arsene says, “He looks quite good but I won’t rush him back because I have made that mistake before.” Rosicky has still not fully healed from the hamstring injury he sustained in the FA Cup fixture against Newcastle. Song is still out due to medial knee ligament damage which he sustained at the ACN and Djourou is back in training after the groin injury he got in the Carling Cup semifinal with Tottenham.

FINANCIAL NEWS: Red & White Holdings have issued a statement this past week stating that they have no intention of pursuing any more shares once they finish acquiring 25 percent.

TEAM NEWS: The club has announced that 26,597 e-mails were sent in to wish Eduardo well following his injury last week at St. Andrew’s. The club has posted a selection on their website. Birmingham City paid the £10,000 medical bill for Eduardo’s emergency operation.

Carlos Vela to replace Eduardo?

26 02 2008

The Arsenal medical staff have assessed the extent of the damage to Eduardo and hope that he will have a full recovery after nine months.

So who is the man to replace Eduardo?

With RVP apparently soon to be back from injury himself I’m sure he can slot into the left hand side of attack until the end of the season. But this still leaves us very short of attacking options for almost a year.

Will Arsenal go out and sign a striker in the summer? I doubt it.

I feel we already have the prefect replacement for Eduardo and thats Carlos Vela.

Currently on loan to Osasuna,Arsène Wenger has already said that he expects Carlos Vela to be a part of his first-team squad next season. Carlos is a very similar player to Eduardo.Cool in front of goal and naturally left footed.

This is Carlos in action vs Real Madrid playing on the left hand side.We look forward to seeing him at the club next season. Lets just hope that Van Persie will be back soon

Reckless Tackling - The F.A Need To Take Steps…

25 02 2008

… To prevent anything like the Taylor tackle to ever happen again. It would be impossible to keep a 100% record, of that I acknowledge, but what people seem to miss about the recent Taylor incident is that a tackle like that should not have happened in the first place.

Taylor was about a foot above the ball. That tackle was designed to hurt. Not injure, but to play the Blackburn way and try and bully our players.

He was not 2 inches above the ball, not 6 inches, but a foot. Taylor is not that bad a player. If you’ve played football, you know that you don’t go that high unless you want to hurt.

He didn’t want to get Eduardo injured, just trying to make a point and in doing so put the career of a fellow professional at risk.

Also, if the F.A don’t extend the ban, then they are officially a disgrace. A message has to be sent, that these sort of tackles will not be tolerated. Eboue got red carded against United and both him and Taylor will serve a three game ban. Are both their crimes identical?

I get what people mean about previous tackles being allowed, but you can’t change the past. Because others have gotten away with it due to the FA’s incompetence, doesn’t mean they should in the future.

Which is exactly why a precedent has to be set, to prevent something like this happening in the future.Furthermore, I think it’s cowardly of Taylor to not come out and make a public statement or apology. Yes, I know, McCleish has apologized and said it was unintentional but it just sounds like PR to me. Taylor should come out, personally, and make a statement if he wants to clear his name. Shouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t intentional, should it? However, Taylor apparently went to visit Dudu in the hospital, so if true, then fair play, there are some who would not have bothered.

Point is, that sort of tackle should not be made in the first place. It was two footed, studs up on to Dudu’s shin. Football is meant to be a physical game but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Intentional or not.

You could see Dudu’s bones sticking out. No matter how quick Dudu was, it wouldn’t have caused that much damage without recklessness of some extent on Taylor’s sides. Just watch the slow mo videos or pictures. You’ll see that it was a studs up challenge, a foot above the ball. Hardly legal?
It’s something the F.A need to sort out, or we’ll be seeing more of this in the future.

The ref did his job in carding the player, but the F.A is going to fuck up. They will not do anything to extend the ban and something similar will happen in the near future….

If the F.A decide to grow some balls, take some action and send a message then fair play to them, I’ll take back what I said.

It’s easy to miss the point I’m trying to make, that a tackle like that should not have been made in the first place.

I do not want Taylor’s head, nor do I want him banned for life. That would serve little purpose.

What I’m saying is, that I can see this happening again in the future and that means the careers of other players at risk.

It was a disgraceful tackle, intentional or not. It was a foot from the ball, two footed and with studs up. You only make that kind of tackle if:

A) You’re a shite tackler
B) You want to hurt someone

We don’t need any of those in the EPL, and it’s a matter the F.A need to investigate. If it means forcing clubs to spend more time practicing the art of defending, or giving harsh bans for people who make those kinds of tackles, then so be it.

I am all for a bit of physical play. You need that sometimes, and shit does happen but there is a line and the majority of B’rum’s players crossed it last night.

It was a studs up tackle and a foot above the ball? There is an art to defending, and defending was not what Taylor did last night.

You might get away with a yellow card for doing it on a school pitch. Seeing something as pathetic and shite as that is not what you come to expect from the EPL.

Tell me, Eboue has got a three match ban because of his antics at OT. Taylor has got a three match ban because he has taken a player out for a year. Fair?

Eboue’s antics had more to do with intent, but it wouldn’t have put a players career at risk. His punishment fits the crime, whereas if Taylor doesn’t get an extended ban it will be a disgrace…

If you watch the video again, you’d see that the tackle was made a foot above the ball. No amount of skill or speed on Dudu’s part would’ve changed that and he would’ve been hurt badly regardless.

Yes, some people are overreacting but others are treating this as a light matter.

There are very few people who are not treating the injury at the level it should, I acknowledge and am grateful for that.

But that’s not what I’m arguing for. What I am arguing for, is that Taylor should be punished to prevent this from happening again and a lot of people seem to think that because worse things have happened in the past, Taylor should not be punished.

Say a man kills another man out of hatred, but manges to get away with it. You would still punish another man, who got drunk and in a stupid and reckless move accidentally killed someone.

Yes, Taylor’s move was stupid and reckless but he wasn’t forced by anyone to do it but did it anyway.

He has possibly ended the career of a fellow professional due to his recklessness and we don’t need that happening again.

It often takes incidents like this for people to sit up and take notice. This is the consequence of not punishing the likes of Mikel and Ballack in the past. If we don’t do something about it now, it will happen again in the future.

If it was Gerrard or Rooney or Terry that had been injured, the media, country and FA would be in an uproar and bans would be handed out without second thought.

Now, a question to United fans. Wanyne Rooney, the 21 year old on whom you spent 27m on, has just hit a fine run of form and is out for the rest of the season, and the majority of the next season, leaving you with two fit strikers. He is out because of another professional tackling like a 10 year old. What would your reaction be?

If Dudu had not gotten injured then every body would’ve said “he was unlucky not to get injured due to that tackle”. People have been saying that all season and it was only a matter of time before someone got injured.

To hit a player with a force to damage him that badly, is not just mis timed. It was a reckless tackle.

Like I said, I don’t think Taylor had any intent of injuring Dudu, it was just a stupid, reckless tackle. I can’t believe that the media is still going on about AW’s comments when he’s retracted them….. What we should be discussing, is how to prevent this happening in the future.

Now lets win it for Eduardo

24 02 2008

Terrible weekend to be a Gooner but I feel that this will motivate the players to go on and win the title for Eduardo.

But of course we have been here before.

In March 2002 Influential star Robert “Bobby” Pires was stretchered off suffering a knee ligament injury that kept him out for six months. This also kept Pires out of the 2002 World Cup. Arsenal went on to win the double that season and in the final game of the season at Highbury Pires came onto the pitch to collected his medal the rest of the Arsenal squad bowed to Pires as a sign of respect.

Lets go on and win the championship for Eduardo and then bring him out at the Emirates to collect his medal.

Maybe this will inspire him during his lengthy rehab.

Surly the rest of the Arsenal players and management will use this as motivation to win the title? If this cant fire them up then nothing can.

Come on Arsenal, Lets do it for Eddy

Good News On Eduardo Injury

24 02 2008

Eduardo

By -Shaun-

News reports in Croatia state that Eduardo called Croation coach Bilić last night from hospital.

Bilić said: “He called me, said he was okay and will definitely return. I felt huge optimism in his voice and the will to return to the pitch. The important thing right now is that Eduardo is mentally strong and believes in his return, which will help his recovery.”

This is a good sign for the hitman, as many doubted he would ever play again.

Also he will be transferred from Birmingham’s Selly Oak hospital to London this afternoon. The surgery was successful, and for the next six weeks he will be wearing a semi-open cast.

The Gooner Forum will keep you updated with any news on his recovery, and we all wish Eduardo the best of luck.

Eduardo - I am determined to overcome this injury

Eduardo has given his account of the terrible events at Birmingham City on Saturday.

The Croatian, 25 on Monday, broke his leg following a challenge from Blues defender Martin Taylor in the third minute of the game at St Andrews. He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery that night. The striker has since returned to a London-based hospital for further treatment.

Speaking for the first time after the incident, the summer signing  from Dinamo Zagreb ruled himself out of the rest of the season and Euro 2008 in the summer however he added that he is ‘determined to overcome this injury’.

“I don’t remember the incident very well and it is not something that I want to see again on television or in the newspapers,” said Eduardo.

“All I remember is that when I fell, I looked down at my foot and it had turned the other way. The rest is just a blank. It was an unfortunate situation but these things can happen in football.

“I am unsure at the moment of the extent of the injury and how long I will be out of action for but I know that I won’t be able to play for Arsenal for the rest of the season or be ready in time for the Euros this summer.

“But I’m not worried about that. My concentration and determination is on making as quick a recovery as possible. I am determined to overcome this injury.

“I would like to thank the medical team here at Arsenal for their efforts as well as the staff at Selly Oak Hospital who carried out the operation on Saturday night. Everyone there made me feel as comfortable as possible.

“I would also like to say how touched I am by the many messages of support I have received and to be surrounded by my loved ones at this time.”

Gunners in with More then a Shout

23 02 2008

Before I begin this article I would like to wish a fast and speedy recovery to a Mr Eduardo Da Silva and would like to announce that I hope to see him back in an Arsenal shirt sooner then what some people are saying. I also agree with Arsene Wenger and feel Taylor should never play football again. But lets not get sidetracked. Get well soon Eduardo as you are too good to let this injury get the better of you and I hope you come back better.

Okay is everybody feeling good? Because I have heard things like, “This is it” and “There goes our title hopes”, etc, etc. Now I know nothing went our way this weekend, our this week in three competitions but lets not get carried away, everybody has their bad weekends. Like Man Utd a few weeks back losing to Bolton, etc. Now we need to shake it off and give it all for the two trophies we CAN still win.

Now the bookies may be back Man Utd to win the league from here on in, but they are also forgetting that we hold a three point gap right now. As long as we hold that then the league is ours, so in a way it is ours to throw away. I am also confident we will do it.

Also I do say that knowing that we will not have Eduardo for the rest of the season, and I know Robin Van Persie is a good way away from being back to Robin Van Persie but look at the positives. We have two youthful and hungry player that I believe are capable of doing it. Theo Walcott, who scored two today and Bendtner I reckon is capable but needs to prove his worth. It maybe time to sink or swim for them. But I feel that they can both do a job for us, and a good one at that. Nick may not have been the best up to now, but he has shown signs, and Walcott may have added confidence to his game as it is possible that is where he was/is lacking.

This is why we can do it:

Current table:

  | Home | Away
Team P W D L F A W D L F A GD PTS
1 Arsenal 27 12 2 0 31 8 7 5 1 25 12 36 64
2 Man Utd 27 12 1 1 32 5 7 3 3 23 10 40 61

Barclays Premiership Fixtures, Prediction

(H) Aston Villa, Win=3 points

(A) Wigan Athletic, Win=3 points

(H) Middlesbrough, Win=3 points

(A)Chelsea, Draw=1 point

(A)Bolton, Win=3 points

(H)Liverpool, Win= 3 points

(A)Man Utd, Loss=0

(H)Reading, Win=3 points
(A)Derby County= 3 points
(H)Everton, Draw=1 point

(A)Sunderland, Win= 3 points

We all know that if we are going to be Champions then we need Champion”s form and these results would be Arsenal at our best. So we I once again say we need to be at our 100% best.

So if this is the case we will finish with 64+26=90pts

Man Utd have quite a difficult running so I am going to imagine they will pick up 25 points in their remaining games (their fixtures can be found anywhere). So that means we would win the league by four points lets hope it happens.

Then looking at Chelsea I reckon they will get about 28 points which will bring them to 83 and would make them fall short.

Warning, this is going to take the best of performances. So good that we should be more consistent then what we have been until this point. All we can do is hope we come through. So one more mess up or two will ruin our title hopes and we will have to be at our best week-in-week-out.

So lets hope we do it, keep the fingers crossed until the end of the season, hopefully.

Then the Champions League is the same test. We will be missing squad players. But we still need to play our best. And in Europe we need to be strong at the back and play our best football, the “Arsenal” football that can beat anyone just like the league. Same goes for both. Best football in every game. But if we do that in Europe (and of course at home) and take our chances(just like the Premiership) then we can do it this year also.

I know we can do it, we just need to be at our best. From here on in, no more slip ups, and combine that with beating the big teams and we can do it.

Believe in ourselves. Just not cocky.
Come on you Gooners.

Eduardo Da Silva Injury + Pictures

23 02 2008

On behalf of the Gooner Forum, our thoughts and prayers are with our young player Eduardo Da Silva, who today suffered a horrific injury by the hands of Birmingham City’s Martin Taylor.

As of yet, no official news has been released of the extent of his injury, but when looking at pictures and videos, I can say that it’s safe to assume that his chances for the rest of the season and Euro 2008 are finished. Doctors have yet to decide whether surgery is needed.

If his injuries are as serious as the ones Newcastle United’s Alan Smith received then it is unlikely he will appear for Arsenal until 2009-10. And Alan Smith was never the same after that injury.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was furious in his post match interview, asking for Martin Taylor to be “banned for life”.

Blue’s boss Alex McLeish insisted that there was no intent of injury from Martin Taylor, who was “distraught” by the tackle.

‘Martin’s distraught about the lad’s injury.’ ‘It’s certainly not in Martin Taylor’s make-up at all to commit a malicious tackle.’

Arsenal boss Wenger, thought otherwise.

‘This guy should never play football again,’ he fumed. ‘What is he doing on the football pitch? ‘I’ve gone along with the idea for a long time that to stop Arsenal, you have to kick Arsenal. I knew that was coming for a long time now.’

Of Eduardo’s injury, Wenger added on Sky Sports: ‘His injury is very, very bad. ‘More than the season is over.’

From my point of view, I don’t think that there was any intent in the tackle but it was nonetheless a reckless and needless tackle. All credit to Eduardo, who didn’t shy out of it.

There is likely to be a lot of controversy about this. Personally, taking Taylor to the court and going through all that hassle is needless, it won’t bring Eduardo back from injury. I am all for a lengthy ban but the final decision, in my opinion, should be left down to the player.

However, injuries like these are becoming more and more frequent. Football is a physical game and every player who plays it should know the risks. However, there has to be line set. Eduardo may be limping for the rest of his life.

Why do players feel the need to go into two footed tackles, or with their studs up? Bad training? This is an issue the F.A need to investigate to prevent from happening again.

We have to think about Eduardo’s future at the club as well. He is still a young player, and showed a lot of potential this season. Many had big hopes for him next season, but this injury may set him back to square one all over again. We currently have two fit strikers, three when all are fit. If he is set to be injured next season, a replacement has to be bought, and with Robin constantly injured and Bendtner and Ade not looking like a good partnership, the signs aren’t very good.

Reyes was a different player after he was bullied out of the United game all those years ago, and Alan Smith does not look like the same player after his injury.

We just have to hope for the best, let’s hope he does an Abou Diaby and comes back from this horrific injury, raring to go and bagging in the goals. From what I’ve seen, he’s a tough little lad.

bOG a Croatian user of The Gooner Forum, had the following to say

“Hi guys
I’m a Croat.
And this is a sad day for my country.

Dudu didn’t just represent a great footballer and a humble guy in this world of materialistic and money crazed sport, but a real shot of international friendship of nations.

He is a Brazilian,Croatian and a Gooner.

For him to represent us on Euros is beyond Croatia, Brazil and Arsenal.
It is to represent talent with no label.

But he will come back, as a pheonix. As all that wear croatian checkers.”

The following are pictures of his injury, NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Though the tackle did not look intentional, Martin Taylor did not look too “distraught”

Again, I would like to wish Eduardo Da Silva a speedy recovery on behalf of The Gooner Forum and Arsenal fans everywhere.

Update:

Eduardo undergoes surgery (Arsenal.com)

Eduardo underwent surgery in hospital on Saturday and is currently resting. The Croatian striker sustained a broken leg in the 2-2 draw with Birmingham earlier in the day.

Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to wish him a speedy recovery.

Almunia or Lehmann?

22 02 2008

This must be one of the most difficult selection decisions Wenger has to make in recent years,Almunia who was excellent pre injury is back in the squad but Lehmann has played really well in his absence, so what does Wenger do?

Some might say Lehmann is a walking timebomb but for me he has to be number 1.

He has the experience, skill and knowledge to deal with the title run in and big game away to Milan to come.

There is nothing between Jens and Almunia in terms of ability this season,Jens just edge it for me in term of organising the defence and presence in big games away from home. We all know how Mad Jens will respond to pressure at this stage of the season, he is been there wore the t shirts. We do not have time to experiment.

Almunia will have his time next season when Mad Jens leave the club in the summer and we are already champion.

And whats all this about Almunia recently seeing ghosts? Can this man be trusted in this current fram of mind?

From Dailymail.co.uk

Arsenal goalkeeper is convinced his house is haunted by the ghost of a monk. Shocked
Manuel Almunia has been given special permission to go home for lunch to avoid leaving his wife Ana alone at the house in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire.

The 30-year-old gloveman said his home was built on the site of a former psychiatric hospital, and his wife had seen a monk holding a candle standing over the bed

Maybe Jens has been playing around with the bedroom sheets again?

Birmingham City Preview

22 02 2008

vs.

Barclay’s Premier League - Round 27
St. Andrews, Birmingham 23 February 2008
Kickoff @ 12:45pm

By Natsteel

SQUAD: Almunia, Sagna, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy, Walcott, Flamini, Fabregas, Hleb, Adebayor, Eduardo, Lehmann, Bendtner, Denilson, Gilberto, J Hoyte, Traore, Song.

MISSING: Djourou, van Persie, Toure, Rosicky, Diaby, Eboue (suspended)

FORM: Birmingham are winless in all competitions since a 3-0 win at home over Middlesbrough on Boxing Day. They’ve only won one of their last 7 home matches. Birmingham have only 3 points in their last 6 matches and 6 points from their last 6 home matches. Meanwhile, Arsenal have won 3 on the trot away from home. City’s record is 5-7-14 and they are above Reading for the last relegation spot on goal difference with 22 points.

HISTORY: Arsenal are 6-2-1 against City under Arsene Wenger with the sole defeat coming back on May 15th, 2005 when Bandiani gave City the lead with ten minutes remaining. Dennis Bergkamp leveled the match in the 88th minute only to have Emile Heskey net the winner for City in the stoppage time.

STATS: Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor is tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for the league lead in goals with 19. Cesc Fabregas is second in the league in assists with 12 behind Ashley Young of Aston Villa (13). Gael Clichy is one of only 12 players in the league to have played in all 26 of their club’s fixtures so far.

INJURIES: Kolo Toure sustained a calf injury on Wednesday and Arsene Wenger has estimated that he will miss 3-4 weeks “at least.” About Robin van Persie, Wenger said, “Robin is not a very long away from being fit at all, but he lacks match-practice. Could he be in the squad for Milan? Maybe, but don’t forget he has not played regularly for five months now.”

TEAM NEWS: We are currently negotiating with Spanish club, Cornella, for 15-year-old Ignasi Miquel, a left-footed midfielder and highly rated prospect by our Spanish scout Francis Cagigao. He had attracted interest from other La Liga sides as well as Manchester United. The club have scheduled talks with his representatives after his 16th birthday.

FINANCIAL NEWS: More financial results were released by the club yesterday which improve on those released back in September.  According to the financial reports released by the club for the 6-month period ending 30 November 2007, Arsenal’s pre-tax profit was £20m, up from £12.9 in 2006. Television income increased 400% from £6.5m to £24.3. As well as a £3.4m increase in match day revenue. In bad news, Red & White Holdings have increased their shareholding to 24.2% which now makes them the club’s largest shareholder having overtaken Danny Fiszman who holds 24.11%. However, Managing Director Keith Edelman sought to reassure fans that a takeover bid was highly unlikely.

RUMOURS: Apparently AC Milan are “lining up an offer” for Adebayor. Newspaper reports also said that Milan were also preparing a £12m bid for Gael Clichy. I wonder if they’re gonna want to move into The Emirates and start wearing red and white as well. This has come on the heels of rumours of Flamini to Juventus and Hleb to Barcelona. As well as the usual Fabregas to Spain rumours. Flamini, Fabregas, and Hleb all stated their love for the club and their desire to stay together following Wednesday’s match against Milan. When Edelman was asked about Arsene’s future at the club amid rumours from Barcelona, he said, “I don’t think it’s something we’re contemplating at this juncture. He has just the other day announced he has a hunger to go on forever. He won’t go on forever, that’s an exaggeration on his part, but I don’t think it will be my problem. I’ve got another seven or eight years to go (at the club) and it won’t be my worry.”

MISCELLANEOUS: Birmingham still have tickets left and they have a Family deal which is 4 tickets (2 adults, 2 children) for £50.
