Arsenal have extended their lead at the top of the English Premier League to 4 points following a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle on Wednesday evening. Adebayor’s superb volley that opened the scoring was cancelled out by Steven Taylor’s second half effort. Arsenal took the lead through the first chance of the match. In the 4th minute Eboue’s cross found Adebayor, who cushioned a chest control before volleying it past Given into the roof of the net. A determined Newcastle team heaped on the pressure in hope of an equaliser. Just 1 minute later Milner hit in a whipping cross that Geremi headed wide. Geremi continued to be involved in the action, when in the 28th minute had his low and hard free kick saved by Almunia. In the 34th minute a Taylor header was saved on the line by Almunia. Arsenal’s other good chance of the half fell in the 43rd minute when an Eboue corner found Adebayor, who hit the hard cross on the half volley, but show wide. Arsenal went into the break 1-0 leaders. They weren’t playing their fluent passing game, but they were defending strong, and holding on to their slender lead.
The first chance of the second half fell to Newcastle. In the 46th minute N’Zogbia let fly from long range with his left, but was well saved by Almunia. In the 50th minute a neat move by Arsenal led to Eboue shooting from a tight angle in the box. It was well saved by Given. Newcastle’s equaliser came in the 60th minute when Eduardo lost the ball. A cross was flicked on by Smith, before falling to Taylor, whose shot hit the post before going in. Newcastle continued to press and in the 64th minute Smith headed over the bar. Arsenal’s best chance came in the 80th minute when an Eboue free kick found Rosicky lurking an the back of the box. He volleyed it back into the danger area but Given punched it away. Late on Newcastle were very lucky not to be reduced to 10 men when Taylor bodychecked Adebayor just outside the box. The match finished 1-1, a hard earned point for Arsenal against a passionate Newcastle side.
