Blackburn vs Arsenal – Player Analysis

First things first, the players out there today played well better than the first team did back in August. It was a hell of a game. We were cruising until Santa Cruz brought them back in it. Down to 10 men, many thought it was definitely going to penalties until Eduardo scored the winning goal.

Fabianski 7
He looks very comfortable tonight. When he was commited, he caught the ball. When he punched the ball, it was to safety. Made some fine stops including the one on one with Santa Cruz where he managed to get a hand to the ball.

Hoyte 7
Defensively sound and passing was good.

Song 8
He was Toure-like !! He cleared the ball no matter how he did it and didn’t take chances. Did u see the runs he made from the back. I think one run beat 3 defenders and the other led to his assist for Eduardo’s winner. YES, he assisted Eduardo.

Senderos 7
Captained the side well and unlucky not to score when his header hit the post.

Traore 7
Very much like Clichy and you can see why he is the fastest in the Arsenal squad. Much improved display from previous games.

Randall 6
Quiet and didn’t create much.

Diarra 7
Almost never lost possession and his energy was amazing. Certainly he and Flamini are all we need for the DM position. Solid and played good passing.

Denilson 5
Was Fabregas-like in the first half when his pass put Eduardo in for his first goal. But in the second half, he was Song-like. Misplacing passes and losing the ball too easily. He was getting frustrated and it showed when he lunged at Dunn. Showed his immaturity.

Diaby 7
Looks a very confident player and his goal was very good, a volley over the keeper into the far corner. He hardly lost possession and linked well with his teammates.

Eduardo 9
I would have gave him 8 before he even scored the winner. Ran his socks off and unlike previous matches, he retained possession. The commentators were talking about Santa Cruz where he scored 2 goals with 2 chances. Well, so did Eduardo and his 2 chances won the game.
When he was one on one for the first goal, I could have said goal before the ball went in. And for the second, there was no mistaking it. Cool, composed finish.
He was playing 2 positions when Denilson was sent off. Diaby slotted into midfield and Edurado had to play left wing and still support Bendtner. Amazing he still managed to score the winner.

Bendtner 7
Worked hard but no end product. Had one shot which he curled and it hit the crossbar. Still lacks some understanding with his teammates but has very good potential.

Barazite 6
Looked better than Randall but still didn’t create much. Unlucky with the injury.

Merida 6
Had time in the match and he looks good. Lacks experience but not skill.

Gibbs 5
No time to impact the game. Main job was to defend.

The match was a long one but it was certainly worth it. In the second half Wenger switched Diaby and Eduardo, anyone could guess why ? Both were playing fine in their respective positions. But it didn’t impact the game much.

Anyway, a great win and I think Denilson’s booking was a straight red which means he misses 3 matches. I think the matches he misses include the league matches, so he’ll be available for the Semi-final. Go young Gunners !!

I think Bendtner had two assists in addition to the hit the cross bar – “No end product” is a little rash.

  2. Ole Gunner says:

Bendtner did have a brilliant game in the first 30 minutes.

  3. Sp1r0r says:

Nope, Bendtner just had one assist and hitting the crossbar. Well, in my case, end product = goals. But he still had a good game.

Don’t really agree with your ratings so here are mine…

Fabianski – 7 (still doesn’t look entirely confident with crosses and has anyone else noticed that he seems to not be able to throw a ball like a proper goalie?)

Hoyte – 8 (rarely lets the team down when called upon and always outstanding defensively. the 2 blocks he made in succession towards the end of the match were top draw. feel sorry for him as he is a potential england right back but is far down the pecking order and is never going to get in the 1st team as long as sagna is around)

Song – 8 (developing into another quality player, never deserved all the stick he got initially. takes a few too many risks at times for a centre back and not always the best positionally but overall looked fairly solid last night and will improve. has to be ahead of senderos now in the pecking order but wenger still has to sign a quality centre back in january if we are to win anything this season)

Senderos – 6 (am baffled by how wenger can keep on picking him. is it because he is cesc’s best mate and popular in the dressing room and intelligent? because it can’t be for football reasons. it’s actually becoming funny to watch him now, you’re guaranteed at least 2 mistakes a game. how many times can he misjudge a long ball and let his attacker go? we will not win anything if he is the replacement for toure in january. i know wenger has bad eyesight but how blind can he be? must go)

Traore – 9 (looks a fantastic prospect who is equally adept at attacking as he is at defending. like song needs to learn when to play it simple still and not risk dribbling round 2 players when unnecessary. will learn from watching the best left back in the world week in week out and will be a future french international)

Randall – 8 (very impressive performance for someone making his first start. his first touch passing was nearly always accurate and showed some great skill. good involvement in first goal too. faded in and out of the game but that’s to be expected for his age. am looking forward to seeing more of him in the future. let’s just hope he’s not another bentley)

Diarra – 9 (i really hope his article from l’equipe was misquoted the other day. ran the show in midfield. looks like he has everything in his game. great strenth on the ball especially and some beautiful crossfield passes. does have a tendency to play stupid balls sometimes and lose possession but that’s my only gripe. a natural successor to gilberto and could build a frightening partnership with cesc for years to come if given the chance. please stay, you will regret it if you don’t. they all do)

Denilson – 8 (outstanding in the first half, not so in the second. stupid rash tackle which deserved a red card and could have scuppered all his teammates hard work. am still amazed at how quickly a brazilian 18 year old settled into the english game. just needs to start playing consistently well over 90 mins and dominating the midfield and we will have a great player on our hands. another one who may not see a lot of first team football if players stay fit, i hope he stays and fights for a place though as would not want to see him being a world class player at another big club in the future)

Diaby – 8 (nearly awarded him a 9 but still trys to take on too many players at times therefore losing possession. a great performance though and he looks quite comfortable out on the left now. amazes me how he keeps the ball at times with so many players round him. will he ever get to play in his favoured position though? seems to be 6th choice in the centre of mdfield which he can’t be too happy with)

Eduardo – 8 (haven’t seen many players that calm in front of goal and could turn out to be the best natural finisher we’ve had since wrighty. we may have finally found our ‘fox’. didn’t think he kept possession as well as some of his teammates at times but can’t argue with his scoring record and was our matchwinner despite not playing brilliantly. worked tirelessly for the team too and deserevd to be on the winning side. once he settles and gets more chances i think we have a 20 plus goals a season player)

Bendtner – 9 (i love this kid more and more every time i see him. seems to have it all, reminds me of bergkamp at times with a bit of alan smith thrown in. very intelligent player who also seems like a good finisher and i like his attitude. he believes in his ability and feels like he should be playing which is want i want from our players regardless of their age. would like to see him replace adebayor sooner rather than later)

    Subs:

Barazite – 8 (how does wenger keep doing this?! another one who before his injury showed some great touches and skill and looked totally at ease on the big stage)

Merida – 7 (had to defend mostly which is not his game but along with vela potentially our most exciting prospect coming through. another cesc? surely having 2 of them would be unfair on every other team?)

Gibbs – 7 (didn’t have time to do anything but he’ll get a 7 anyway as he’s english and is probably already better than most of mclaren’s last england squad!)

To sum it up… the potential of this squad is frightening. What other team in this country could play their kids away to one of the top 8 teams in the country and dominate as they did in the first half? If Blackburns first goal would have been correctly ruled out for offside I could have seen us winning comfortably. Not only did they show their technical ability but their workrate and battling qualities were also there for all to see and to actually go on to win the game with 10 men speaks volumes about their character too.

Now bring on the scum in the semis!

Oh, and did not know about it. Thanks for the information …

  9. Sp1r0r says:

Maybe I’m more of a perfectionist but I don’t understand how you couldn’t give Eduardo the highest ratings ? That was his best game in an Arsenal shirt to date. And I’m surprised you gave the subs high ratings particularly they didn’t do much after coming on, esp Barazite.

And your comment on Gibbs, just shows why English players are overhyped. What did Merida do that shows he is the best prospect. It was ratings based on the game not ratings on how much you like him.

If we ended up losing the game, I don’t suppose you’ll rate them so highly, but I would stay with my ratings based on their performance, not the results.
